Short answer: ticks are most active from spring through fall, but "tick season" is a bit of a misnomer — in much of the country, the risk never fully drops to zero. When and how much you need to worry about ticks depends heavily on where you live, which species are common in your area, and how mild or harsh the most recent winter happened to be.
Why "tick season" is misleading
Most ticks need temperatures consistently above roughly 40°F to stay active, which is why activity climbs sharply in spring and tapers in late fall across most of the U.S. But on any mild winter day above that threshold, ticks — especially blacklegged (deer) ticks — can still be out questing. Treating tick prevention as a spring-through-fall-only habit leaves a real gap on warm winter days, particularly in milder climates.

Nymphs vs. adults: activity by season
Tick life stages matter as much as the calendar. Nymphs — the small, easy-to-miss stage, often compared to a poppy seed — tend to peak in late spring and early summer, and their size makes them especially easy to overlook during a tick check. That combination of high activity and low visibility is part of why early summer sees a spike in tick-borne illness; people are getting bitten by the stage they're least likely to notice. Adult ticks are more active in fall (and on mild winter days), and their larger size makes them somewhat easier to spot, though by no means guaranteed. In practice, this means the season with the least visible tick activity isn't necessarily the season with the lowest risk — it may just be the season where bites are hardest to catch.
Keeping an eye on local conditions
Beyond general seasonal patterns, local risk can shift year to year based on weather, rodent populations (an important early host for some tick species), and other factors that don't show up on a national map. Some state health departments and university extension offices publish local tick activity updates or surveillance data, and they're worth a quick check if you want a more current picture than a general regional guide can offer. When in doubt, treating every outdoor season as tick season — and adjusting effort up or down based on what you're hearing locally — is a more reliable approach than working off a fixed calendar.
Missouri and the Central U.S.: a closer look
Here in Missouri and across much of the Central U.S., lone star ticks are common from spring through fall, and they're the species most associated with alpha-gal syndrome. Warm, humid summers extend the active window, and brushy or wooded trail edges — common throughout the region, especially along the Ozarks and river-bottom trails — are exactly the habitat lone star ticks favor. Blacklegged ticks are present here too, in smaller numbers, which means the region carries a mix of risks rather than just one. If you hike, hunt, or forage locally, this is squarely home turf for tick exposure, not an edge case, and it's worth treating prevention as a default rather than something you only think about after a trip somewhere else.
Year-round prevention habits
Because risk doesn't fully disappear in any season, the habits that matter are the ones you keep up consistently: permethrin-treated clothing, a repellent on exposed skin, gaiters to close the ankle gap, and a thorough check after time outdoors regardless of the month.
